LOCTITE® 401 is designed for bonding difficult-to-bond materials that require uniform stress distribution, and resistance to high tensile and/or shear stresses. The product provides fast bonding of a wide range of materials including metals, plastics and elastomers. LOCTITE® 401 is also suitable for bonding porous materials such as wood, paper, leather, and textiles.
Registered NSF Category P1 for use as a sealant where there is no possibility of food contact or in processing areas. Note: this is a regional approval. Please contact your local Technical Service for further information and clarification.
Under normal conditions, atmospheric humidity initiates the curing process. Although full functional strength develops in a relatively short time, curing continues for at least 24 hours before reaching full chemical/solvent resistance.
GENERAL INFORMATION
This product is not recommended for use with pure oxygen and/or oxygen rich systems, and should not be chosen as a sealer for chlorine or other strong oxidisers. For safety information on the handling of this product, please refer to the Safety Data Sheet.
Directions for use
1. The areas to be bonded must be clean and degreased. Clean surfaces with a LOCTITE® solvent based cleaner and allow to dry.
2. To improve the adhesion of low surface energy plastics, a Loctite® primer can be applied. Avoid over priming and allow to dry completely.
3. If necessary, a Loctite® activator can be used. Apply the activator to one of the surfaces to be bonded (if primer is also being used, do not apply the activator to the same surface). Allow the activator to dry.
4. Apply the adhesive to one of the surfaces to be bonded (do not apply the adhesive to the activated surface). Do not use any tools, such as a cloth or brush, to spread the adhesive. Assemble the parts within a few seconds. The parts must be positioned precisely, as there is only a short time available for repositioning.
5. Loctite® Activator can be used to cure strips of product outside the bonding area. Spray or drip the activator on the excess product.
6. Keep joints fixed or clamped until the adhesive has set them.
7. Allow the product to develop full strength before subjecting it to operational loads (typically 24-72 hours after assembly, depending on joint gap, materials and environmental conditions).
Store the product in its packaging, closed and in a dry place. Storage information may be indicated on the labelling of the product packaging. Optimum storage: 2 °C to 8 °C. Storage below 2 °C or above 8 °C may adversely affect the properties of the product. Material removed from the packaging may become contaminated during use. Do not return leftover product to the original container.
